Philosophy

The HTL aims for a multi-perspective shaping of technology. The varying perspectives of developers, users, agencies and consumers, along with risks and impact of technology on society are examined and analyzed with the help of expertise and methods. Hereby the scientists of the htl use their manifold competences and experiences in inter- and transdisciplinary research. The main challenge consists both of the heterogeneous imperatives of high-tech risk societies and the debates on the supposed end of privacy in a society marked by security, surveillance and transparency. In this context it is important to initiate controversies concerning goals and judgment of technology, to develop solutions for social systems, and to create latitude and environments for continued social learning.

In their analyses, the research projects consider all relevant technical, social, legal, etc. elements and their constellations and interdependencies. During early innovation phases in particular, the social dimensions for user and context can be integrated into development. Potential conflicts of goals, interests and values can be articulated and communicated. In the face of the problem areas security, risk, privacy and advanced digital information technology, the various focal points of the HTL are centered on the basic tensions between security and freedom, and on the ambivalence of social standardization, control, regulation and surveillance.
